'Sup YouTube, what's goin' on? CoryxKenshin here, and WELCOME!

―Cory's intro

Cory DeVante Williams[1] (born: November 9, 1992 (1992-11-09) [age 31]), better known online as CoryxKenshin, is an American YouTuber, gamer, and internet personality best known for his comedy filled gaming videos. He first started YouTube with making home skits which was a popular category at the time. Eventually, he would develop his love for horror games, and began to become popular from videos that he uploaded on the games Ao Oni and Five Night's at Freddy's.

Ever since the Ao Oni video, he has been referred online as the Ankle Breaker, and other nicknames. As of 2024, Cory has 18 million subscribers, making him one of the biggest YouTubers of color on the platform.

Personal life[]

Cory Williams was born on November 9, 1992, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was raised in Detroit, Michigan. He has a brother named Anthony, who appeared in one of his videos[2] and a pet dog named Samson the Savage (also known as "Sam") who joined the Samurai Community on May 3, 2016 but has moved to his parent's house due to him developing allergies.

Originally, Cory went to Michigan State University but later dropped out to further pursue his YouTube career.

Cory makes it clear that he is of a Christian faith, adding verses to the end of most of his videos, as well as making many references to God on his channel.

On April 25, 2017, Cory announced in a video that he has Ectodermal Dysplasia, a rare genetic disorder which he inherited from his father. He only has 24 teeth instead of 32 and lacks any normal amount of hair on his body.

He announced in a Try Not to Laugh video that his mom opened up a beauty shop somewhere in Michigan.[3]

Career[]

Cory first joined YouTube on April 26, 2009, at 16 years old and uploaded his first video in May of the same year. Around that time, he would upload skits sometimes starring his friends. In October 2013, Cory played his first horror game under the name, White Finger. The first game series he made was about the 1994 sports game called Super Punch Out!. Cory appeared in several gaming festivals such as Comic-Con International and PAX, during which he met other YouTubers such as Muyskerm, Yamimash, LordMinion777, and jacksepticeye. Cory is also known for playing horror games, especially RPG horrors, but he has also played action games such as Bloodborne and Dark Souls. His favorite playthroughs are Outlast, The Evil Within, and Corpse Party.

On May 30, 2016, he was involved in a car accident with his friend Brandon. He was driving back home from Ohio after a long day at the theme park with him, when he inadvertently fell asleep on the wheel and crashed into a semitruck. Luckily, they weren't injured, but Cory suffered a bruise on his shoulder. A video was uploaded a day later in which he talks about this near-death experience. He also promotes the non-profit organization, the National Sleeping Foundation. The pictures he shows in the video depict his car with the front bumper and engine severely impacted in the car. If it wasn't any worse, Cory and Brandon could have suffered their legs being amputated or losing their lives. Cory thanks God for keeping him and Brandon alive.

Feuds with YouTube[]

On August 27, 2021, one day after Cory returned to YouTube, his channel received a Community Guidelines strike on a Try Not to Laugh video he uploaded in 2019, It is flagged as: "Child abuse". In response, on September 2, 2021, Cory uploaded a video titled "YouTube Gave Me A Strike & Won't Tell Me Why" in which he explains the situation as well as expressing his frustration and disdain for YouTube's lack of communication when situations like these occur. The video reached #1 on Trending within hours of being uploaded.[4]

On August 24, 2022, Cory uploaded a video titled "YouTube: Racism and Favoritism", where he explains that his playthrough of The Mortuary Assistant was age restricted for an alleged violation of their Suicide & Self-Harm policy. However, Cory noticed that none of the other playthroughs from other YouTubers were age restricted and sent an appeal to YouTube stating this as evidence. Six days later, YouTube rejected the appeal without giving a clear reason why. Cory then sent a clip of Markiplier's playthrough of the suspected reason for the restriction to YouTube, to which they finally removed Cory's age restriction. However, a couple days later, not only was Cory's video re-age restricted, but also Mark's video. With all of this in mind, Cory believes his channel is constantly and unfairly scrutinized more than other YouTubers and suspects the reason for this could be racism (not necessarily YouTube as a whole, but the policy team in question), but also said he'd happily rescind his arguments and publicly apologize to YouTube if he ends up being wrong. He also expressed his disapproval towards YouTube Black, believing it to be fake, condescending, and patronizing, saying that Black YouTubers don't need a separate platform and should just be treated like any other YouTuber, that is putting good content on the YouTube homepage regardless of race.[5]

Hiatuses[]

Cory has become notorious for his hiatuses. Since the first in 2011 he has had a total of 13 hiatuses.

On September 30, 2011, Cory took a two-year hiatus, not uploading again until July 4, 2013. This is not a well-known hiatus as this occurred when Cory was still a small YouTuber.

On February 16, 2016, Cory stopped uploading for two months. During this time, he wasn't active on Twitter, Instagram, or any of his other social media platforms. On April 29, 2016, Cory announced he would return, and uploaded a video on April 30. He apologized for not updating any of his social media sites and also apologized for leaving his fans in the dark about what was going on.

Two years later, on January 16, 2018, Cory stopped uploading again for four months. Cory was on a trip before he stopped uploading. He returned on May 20, 2018, with a live stream in which he explained that he was not 100% ready, wasn't well-rested, and just wanted to quit.

On September 20, 2018, Cory announced he was taking a hiatus from losing his aunt due to cancer. This hiatus was the shortest, lasting only four days. On November 16, 2018, Cory took another hiatus, but returned one month later with a comical skit video called "ASMR HORROR GAMES"

On May 8, 2019, he uploaded the video "THE 100-DAY STREAK IS OVER! 100 Upload Days In a Row" in which he explains that it has been always his goal to upload daily for 100 days before taking a four-month break as a joke.[6] He considered this a test of perseverance and hard work. However, he uploaded a gameplay video one month later on June 12, 2019, and said he was going to return on June 16, 2019, but did not. During this time, he took many trips, notably one to Japan with his friend Dashie, and was spending a lot of time with his family. Cory would also remove his Instagram page in July 2019, but then re-uploaded it in September 2019. This hiatus was the second longest, lasting nine months long from June 28, 2019, to April 3, 2020.

On May 31, 2020, Cory uploaded a video stating why 2020 was the worst year of his life. In the video, Cory stated that he needed to spend some time away from his videos and social media. He revealed that he found himself depressed and anxious because of YouTube. He stated that he wished his life could've amounted to more and he felt he spent too much time focusing on his videos and overthinking them. Cory left for two weeks until June 19 when he uploaded a video in which he plays The Last of Us 2, in which he stated had to come back for.

Throughout both July and August Cory uploaded videos consistently however he stopped uploading after September 19, 2020. Cory's 9th hiatus would last for nearly two months, with him returning on November 6, 2020. Cory would again upload consistently until January 25, 2021, in which he stated in a community post that he had personal stuff going on and couldn't upload that day. He stated he would upload the next day at 2:00 pm but did not and had a brief tenth hiatus which would last until January 28, 2021.

Following his 9 million subscriber milestone that was uploaded on March 7, 2021, Cory stopped posting on YouTube, Twitter, or Instagram, marking it as his eleventh hiatus. On June 23, 2021, Cory reached 10 million subscribers. On August 26, 2021, Cory released a video titled "Regarding My Retirement" in which he announced he was not retiring, was going back to school while still uploading videos, and unboxed his new Diamond Play Button for hitting 10 million subscribers.[7]

From August 2021 to December 2021, Cory had been consistent and was uploading between 2-5 videos a week. On December 23, 2021, Cory released the finale to his FNAF: Security Breach series. This would be the last video he would upload until February 26th, 2022, with the upload of his new video "ELDEN RING is RAGE GAME of 2022". This would be his twelfth hiatus.

On April 10, 2022, Cory uploaded the last video before his thirteenth hiatus. Cory then returned on August 8, where he made a video that is an open and sincere conversation about the state of the community, some issues he have seen within it, and his gratitude towards the Samurais, explained in the description.

From August to September, Cory uploaded consistently until September 28, 2022, when he uploaded the last video, which was his fourteenth hiatus. This lasted ten days.

He would stay active, with sporadic uploads until just recently, after releasing his reaction video to the FNAF movie trailer, which shows that he is starring in the movie as a taxi driver. He has since been on hiatus.

"Retirement"[8][]

On August 22, 2020, Cory revealed that he plans on retiring from YouTube when he hits 10 million subscribers. He hints in multiple videos saying that he will retire. On March 7, 2021, he uploaded a video "9 Million. The Home Stretch." when he hit 9 million subscribers, he became inactive on YouTube and social media for 5 months, leading his fans and some of his friends to believe he was retiring. But on August 23, 2021, he said he wouldn't retire. He "wasn't sure what he was doing" when he revealed that he was because it was "too early." Cory stated that he could not pull himself to retire anytime soon despite his words. He views YouTube as too big of a gift to simply give up on. He also said he would like to do numerous things while he continues, including: starting a family, going back to college, and possibly starting a 2nd channel.

Besides all of the month-long hiatuses, as of now he currently shows no signs of retiring at any time.
