Baroness is an American sludge metal, progressive metal, stoner rock, heavy metal, and alternative metal band from Savannah, Georgia, whose original members all grew up together in Lexington, Virginia. They were formed in 2003 by John Baizely, (lead vocals, rhythm guitars, keyboards, percussion), Allen Blickle, (drums), Summer Welch, (bass), and Tim Loose, (lead guitar).

In 2006 Tim was replaced by Brian Blickle, he was replaced in 2008 by Peter Adams, and even he was replaced in 2017 by Gina Gleason. In 2012, Summer was replaced by Matt Maggioni, and then he was replaced in 2013 by Nick Jost. And in 2013 Allen Blickle was replaced by Sebastian Thompson. John is the only founding member of the band that's still part of it today.
