Pyongyang Broadcast Service - D.P.R of Korea.,[1] formerly known as NORTH KOREA TODAY,[2] NORTH KOREA TODAY (DPRK NEWS CHANNEL),[3] and rodrigorojo1[4] is a YouTube channel that is believed by many to be operating from Pyongyang in North Korea and one of the only YouTube channels that are known to be operating from North Korea. As internet access is restricted to the average North Korean, the only YouTubers in North Korea are associated with the government. The channel uploads North Korean propaganda and other content relating to the country.

Some of the videos can be played on the WayBack Machine.[5]

The channel was set up to reveal what they are doing and what life is like in North Korea to foreigners as there aren't many channels from the country itself.

This channel used to claim to be from Mexico under the about tab,[6] currently the About tab shows Belgium as the country of origin. There are currently 3 versions about the real origins of the channel:

  • North Korea, because origins of most of the videos are either from Korean Central Television or other North Korean media. However, this version should be considered false, as Korean Central Television can be watched online or via satellite transmission all around the world, and North Korea doesn't refer to itself as such. Even in overseas propaganda they use the names DPRK, Democratic People's Republic of Korea or simply Korea. The channel emblem also speaks against straight North Korean ownership (a Soviet Union coat of arms with Korean peninsula in the center). Although the channel is not really North Korean, its creators have at least some connections to the secretive country, possibly through KFA (Korean Friendship Organization) or Chongryon (The General Association of Korean Residents in Japan).[citation needed]
  • Mexico, because of former claims and some older videos on the channel. There are at least two videos showing reception of North Korean radio broadcasts from Mexico City. Their URL username was "rodrigorojo", which means "Red Rodrigo" in Spanish, the official language of Mexico. The channel's creators also used to run their own website on a Mexican domain at www.dprkfriendship.com.mx (site now defunct).[citation needed]
  • Japan, as currently the channel has a link to Choson Sinbo YouTube channel. Choson Sinbo is a Japanese newspaper and website, which serves as the official media outlet of Chongryon.[citation needed]

Termination[]

On October 4, 2022, the channel was terminated for violating YouTube's Terms of Service, but there is no further explanation.[7]
